Based mainly on Race Mathews’ book about the early Fabians and on the Fabian newsletters. Race was Secretary, President or Chair of the Australian Fabian Society, on and off, for nearly fifty years, from 1960 to 2006. He made sure the Fabian archives and newsletters were placed in key libraries.

In part, this short history is a tribute to the extraordinary commitment by Race Mathews and others to the organisation, and to the Fabian ideals. Interviewed by Robert Larocca in the Fabian newsletter in 1998, Race said: ‘Joining the Society was among the best things I ever did in politics . . . I’ve had as much job satisfaction from working in the Fabian Society as from anything other than the five years from 1967 until 1972 when I was Gough Whitlam’s Principal Private Secretary.’

The story of the Australian Fabians is one of constant birth and rebirth, as it flourished or faltered, depending on the passions and enthusiasm of key individuals, and the different challenges of the times. However it always survived, and always contributed to progressive public thinking.
