Inequality is a defining political issue of our generation. Simple tools like the GINI coefficient are helpful in identifying income distribution within an economy. However, these measures mask the bigger picture of an Australian labour market and industrial relations framework that sees today’s workers losing access to union-fought entitlements like sick leave and annual leave, lower

wages and most significantly a complete lack of job security. We are stuck in a paradigm where incremental advances to workers’ rights are deemed class warfare, but we are told that tax cuts to millionaires and multinationals are good for the economy.
